Prevenzione Serena

Prevenzione Serena is the organized screening program for the prevention and early detection of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer developed by the Regione Piemonte to protect the health of its citizens.

The screening for the prevention of cancer (cancer screening) are health interventions performed on a target population in order to identify people who may have the disease, when it does not yet give symptoms.

Screening may allow earlier diagnosis and treatment of cancer, generally allowing surgeries simpler, less invasive and content.

The program for the screening of female cancers (breast and cervix) was launched in Turin in 1992 and extended to the whole region since 1996. Since 2003 it is also active screening for cancer prevention colorectal cancer.

Prevenzione Serena, implemented by the Local Health Authorities in collaboration with Health Hospitals, is part of the European network of prevention programs for this type of cancer and works, as well as with Health Piedmont, also with the Medical Association, the Italian Society of General Medicine and Faculty Medicine of Regione Piemonte.

The free screening tests offered by Prevenzione Serena are:

  • bilateral mammography to screen for breast cancer;
  • test for the detection of DNA of human papillomavirus (HPV, Human Papilloma Virus) or Pap test to screen for cervical cancer (cervix); 
  • flexible sigmoidoscopy or occult blood in the stool (FOBT, Fecal occult blood test) to screen for colorectal cancer.

​Under the Prevenzione Serena program CPO Piemonte is engaged in:

  • evaluation;
  • research;
  • quality assurance.
